Electrophysiology

The fundamental process underling the term neural activity

is generally taken to be electrical activity

- the action potentials and the spike trains – of neurons.

In our electrophysiology department, we use finely engineered electrodes

to measure local field potentials and the electrical properties of single neurons.

With these techniques we can uncover phenomena on a scale

from channel-specific effects of particular drugs

to the complex interconnections of the hippocampal circuits,

making this a powerful tool for investigating the brain.
